How To Season A New Chalk Board

First off, you may be asking… why do I need to “season” a chalkboard?

A brand new chalk board surface is full of little lines and grooves. If you do not fill those little lines and grooves in, then your chalk art will leave what is called “ghosting” on your board surface. Ghosting is the the faint lines of your image left behind, even after cleaning your board. When you season your board, you use white chalk, and the dust from the chalk fills in all of those little lines and grooves. Remember in school, back in the “olden” days when they still used chalkboards? The chalkboards were never jet black, but rather a dusty dark gray, even after a thorough cleaning. That is the sign of a well seasoned board. Seasoning a new chalkboard is fast and easy, here’s how!

Step #1

Take a piece of white chalk, and rub it up and down and side to side, until the entire surface of the board is covered.

Step #2

With a dry paper towel, wipe off the entire surface.

Step #3

Wrap your white chalk in a damp paper towel, so that the chalk itself becomes damp itself.

Step #4

With the damp chalk repeat Step #1, covering the entire board.

Step #5

Wipe the board with the dry towel.

Step #6

In this last step, wipe the entire board with the damp towel, making sure to remove all of the remaining chalk dust.

Now your board is ready to use! There are so many ways to use your board to create chalk art! Whether with regular chalk, chalk markers, or chalk paste. The sky really is the limit, let your imagination soar!
